Delegat's Group expects operating profit to rise by 10 per cent in 2014, though it warns a high kiwi dollar may hurt earnings. Net operating earnings are expected to rise to $29 million in the 12 months ending 30 June 2014 from $26.3 million a year earlier, managing director Jim Delegat told shareholders at yesterday's annual meeting in Auckland.

Nearly half the region's growers have joined the McLaren Vale Sustainable Winegrowing Australia program since it started in 2009. The 2014 Sydney International Wine Competition has produced the most diverse range of Top 100 and blue-gold award winners in its 33 year history. More than 2000 wines were assessed by six Australian and seven international judges, with the 400 wines awarded the highest points re-judged with food, making it the most consumer friendly wine competition in Australia.

Currently based in Cornwall, renowned viticulturist Smart consults in over 30 countries. He acknowledged all grapes have the potential to make sparkling wine but "not all are distinguished".

New Zealand and France hit International Wine Challenge’s top spot

Bordeaux's wine council hopes the French prime minister's visit to China this week will help ease tension over an ongoing anti-dumping investigation into European wine shipments, but a quick resolution looks unlikely. The Chinese government's anti-dumping probe continues to cast a shadow on European Union (EU) wine producers, even though a deal to resolve the issue which sparked it - tariffs on solar panels entering the EU from China - was this week rubber-stamped by the council of EU state ministers.
